I want to be better tomorrow than I was yesterday.
As for today, I want to celebrate and accept where I am.
This is my way of balancing these concepts:
The past is behind us – our focus should turn forward.
We accept that while our past actions might not have been flawless, they are immutable. And as an added reflection, can we honestly say we acted to the best of our ability with the understanding we possessed then?
The present is here, now. Accept it. Embrace it.
Rarely are events inherently “all bad” or “all good.” Often, the perceived goodness or badness of an event depends on our perspective. In any case, we cannot alter our current situation or the event as it unfolds. We can aim to shape the future, at least in part. Ultimately, we must learn to find the silver linings and accept—even celebrate—the present moment
The future — this is where it gets interesting!
There are aspects of the future we can influence, and others we cannot. The key is discerning which is which. If we are too cautious, we risk missing opportunities for change. Conversely, we might overestimate our ability to effect change. My way of navigating this balance is: if I can envision a concrete effort that could lead to that change, or at least put me on the path toward that desired state, then I’ll go for it! But if I can’t identify a tangible action, I accept that perhaps now isn’t the right time for that change, and I’ll revisit it later when I might be in a different (better, calmer, more focused?) state of mind.
